Sonia Bashing I

Dear Editor,

Political renegades off the deep end! Never in my entire life have I read such gibberish as the puerile ramblings of your writers. As usual, Sonia Mohammed makes me sick. I can't believe she wants Pete and Ben to give up their spots at UT and be replaced by minorities just because they're white and pro-affirmative action. All Pete and Ben were demonstrating for is some freakin' diversity at this place, so leave them alone. They ought to be recognized as role models for us all, but instead you subject them to public ridicule. What the hell is wrong with you people? Have you no shame?

Jennifer Herrnstein, Anthropology major

Editor's reply: Yo momma.

In Defense of Animal Rights Nuts

Dear Editor,

Wes Wynne implies that animal rights activists are nutcases. Well, I'm an animal rights activist, and I'm not crazy simply for advocating humane treatment of other animals. All that carnivores like y'all at Contumacy seem to care about is enjoying your steaks and lobsters at your fancy right-wing cocktail parties. How would you like it, Wes Wynne, if someone gnawed the meat off your bones?

J. C. Redfield, Austin resident

Wes Wynne's reply: That depends. I mean, like, are we talking Nastasjia Kinski here, or what? Alright , seriously for a moment: I respect many of the positions advanced by animal welfare advocates and respect even some of the ethical arguments for vegetarianism. But to place eating a chicken taco on the same moral plane as killing another human being, as some animal rights activists would -- that's not ethics, man, it's nihilism. And when that nihilistic mentality leads to calls for restricting the use of animals in biomedical research, it's dangerous.

Dear Editor,

My student fees better not be going to fund your politically filthy, ridiculous rag. It's bad enough that I pay for some of the outrageous, asinine things that Ms. Mohammed writes in the Daily Texan. It frightens me that y'all have such a reactionary Managing Editor.

Lisa Jenkins, undecided freshman

Editor's reply: No, as conscientious conservatives, we do not rely upon student fees to propagate our agenda. We don't believe in handouts. As for your disdain for Sonia Mohammed as the Managing Editor, guess who was promoted to Editor-in-Chief.

More From the Animal Rights Nuts

Dear Editor,

I can't believe you people joked about printing golden cheeked warbler recipes. The golden cheeked warbler is a beautiful bird that should be admired for its beauty, not its flavor. I humbly request that Contumacy never again take cheap shots at the destruction of endangered animals, especially in such a cruel manner.

Maurice Wilkins, Zoology major

Editor's reply: Since you didn't like the warbler recipe, we thought we'd give you another option; see the next issue for our "Salamander Soufflé" dinner recipe.

Letter From a Normal Person

Dear Editor,

It was so cool the way y'all printed Sonia Mohammed's hate mail. Isn't it funny that the leftists always claim that THEY'RE the tolerant ones? Those hypocritical hate-mongers need therapy. Why don't they quit harassing conservatives and start using their minds instead of their emotions to argue?

Sonia Finds a Friend

Dear Editor,

It's difficult to determine when I first met Sonia Mohammed because her warmth and generous nature, in addition to our kindred conservative ideals, have made me feel as if I've known her forever.

That's why it saddens me that people who don't know her write hateful letters condemning her convictions. I dare the same people to match Sonia's bravery in speaking up for politically incorrect causes, for example, the right to life of unborn children.

What I find most remarkable about Sonia is, not only does she work tirelessly to further the agenda of the Young Conservatives of Texas, but she makes herself a servant to other local and statewide organizations.

A few places you can find Sonia: - registering guests at a fund-raising banquet for an Austin agency that helps women with unplanned pregnancies, - serving as the Mistress of Ceremonies at a statewide pro-life rally sponsored by Texas Right to Life , - volunteering as the media liaison for Greater Austin Right to Life, - facilitating political activity in Austin as precinct judge and chairman, - working for the Republican Party of Texas' Political Director as a supporter of the party's conservative base. She's also opened up her packed schedule to host a few makeup parties to help friends selling Mary Kay to make ends meet.

So, to the authors of hate mail against Sonia Mohammed, I encourage you to learn about the woman behind the YCT banner. Stop the bigoted assumptions labeling Sonia a "woman of color... participating in her own subjugation," and avoid the kind of coarse name calling "Muslim bitch", which debases us all.

Mary Mickle, Former Austin resident

Editor's reply: Thank you so much, Mary. I sincerely appreciate your kind words.
